Good afternoon,

In literacy, we worked on the OI and OY sounds. We also did story mapping of The Three Little Pigs. In science, we needed to build a home that would be strong enough to stop the big bad wolf. Students also added neat features to their homes such as fences, slides, balconies, and even security cameras! That wolf doesn't stand a chance! In math, we explored 2D shapes and 3D objects. Students got to build models of 3D objects. We learned the words faces, edges, and vertices.  We also continued working on subtraction skills using a number line.

Reminders

  • On Wednesday, students received a letter home with instructions to collect supplies and information for our social studies unit about the past and our families. This unit will have lots of involvement, as we are exploring our personal pasts and changes in our family. Thank you so much for taking the time to complete this with your child to support their learning! There will be more information needed as part of next week's homework assignment.
  • We are looking for volunteers for our field trip to Ralph Klein Park on May 16. Please email me if you are available!
  • We also need volunteers for Tuesday from 10:00-11:30 am! PLEASE email me!
Have a great weekend!

Sunday April 17, 2022

Happy Sunday!

Here is what we did at school this week:

-In Science, we used all our recyclable materials to build towers. The challenge was to build the tallest tower possible. We were not allowed to use tape or glue, and we couldn't hold the tower. We worked on our teamwork and cooperation skills as well.

-In math, we drew 2D and 3D shapes! Ask your child to name a few and possibly teach you how to draw these.

-In writing, we fixed a boring story! The story was: "One day I went to school. I came home. The End." The students learned that a story must have a beginning, middle, and end. They each wrote a story. Most of us were able to write MORE than 5 sentences! AMAZING! We are working on adding details and writing more sentences to make our stories interesting.

-In literacy, we worked on the EE and EA vowel pairs. We read a poem and hunted for all the EE and EA words.

Reminders:

I am looking for volunteers for our field trip on MAY 16. Please email me if you are able to join us for the whole day!

-Homework books, spelling tests, and mad minutes will come home on Tuesday

-Our Willy Wonka performance is on THURSDAY! I am looking forward to seeing everyone there! It will be a great show! PLEASE practice the songs over the weekend. Click HERE and scroll down until you see the Oompa Loomp songs labelled Grade 1.

Happy April Fool's Day!

We had an amazing first week back! This week we worked on our subtraction skills and played math games. We went outside to visit our sit spot and observe seasonal changes. See the pictures below.

In writing, we worked on answering 'Would You Rather?' quesitons. 'Would you rather be a panda or a shark?' was the question we had to answer. Talk about this with your family at home and explain your thinking.

In literacy we are working on identifying the short and long E sound. This will help us with our reading and writing!

Students took out new library books this week. If you still have an old one at home, please be sure to send it in!

We are also doing wordles! Thanks to Mrs. Porritt for teaching us how to make our own. Here is a Wordle for you! Try to solve it at home with your family.

REMINDERS

-Please send in money with ticket forms for our Willy Wonka show! Tickets are given on a first come first serve basis.

-Please make sure all homework assignments are being completed. Many of us are forgetting to do the math part of the homework.

NEW SCIENCE UNIT

In April, we will be doing our Building Things unit in Science. This is a very hands-on unit and we are in need of supplies! If you have any of the items below that you are willing to donate to our class, we would appreciate it. DO NOT buy anything, we are only asking for items that you already have at home that may be heading to your recycling bin! Please note that we will share materials brought in and build things as a class. Items sent in will not come back home.

-Paper towel rolls
-Egg cartons
-Cleaned out yogurt/sour cream containers
