Good afternoon,

This week we began our next science unit, Creating Colour. Ask your child to tell you what the primary and secondary colours are. They had a great time experimenting and mixing colours. You can ask your child about this experiment and what colours they were able to make.

In writing, we worked on using adjectives in our sentences. We are now working on sequencing ideas, rather than writing about a topic. We are working on making our sentences exciting to our readers!

In math, we have begun subtraction. This week we worked on showing our thinking using pictures and solving subtraction equations with a number line. This was tricky but we are beginning to understand the process.

In P.E we are continuing to develop our basketball skills. We worked on dribbling, different ways to pass the ball, and shooting into a basket.

Reminders:

-Please check your email as Mrs. Taylor sent important information regarding report cards and events in February.

-There is NO SCHOOL on Monday, Jan 31

-Feb 1 is Lunar New Year. If you celebrate this special day, you are welcome to wear your traditional clothing to school. If you do not celebrate this day, please wear your uniform.

Good afternoon,

We had another great week in grade 1! This week we worked on using adjectives in our writing and when speaking. We are practicing our short vowel sounds during literacy centres.

We continued to work on our pop-up communities in social studies. They look AMAZING and the students have put so much time and effort in. We will be virtually sharing these with you next week.

This week we reviewed Bossy E (it can make a vowel say its name, like in the words game, name, like, cake, etc). We also learned about the WH digraph. You can ask your child to tell you what sound WH makes and they might be able to tell you some words that begin with this digraph too.

Reminders:

-Students MUST be in formal uniform every Monday, but especially this Monday (Jan 24) as we are filming our assembly!

-Homework books were sent home today as well as spelling tests. Great work everyone!

-On Monday, students will be given one box of Covid rapid tests to take home (5 tests in the box). Masks will be kept at school and students will be offered a new one in the morning and at lunch if they need one.

Have a great weekend!

Good afternoon,

We had quite a busy first week back in room 12. We have a student teacher, Mr. Hochhalter (Mr. H) joining our class from now until the end of February. The students have been so kind and welcoming!

Questions to promote discussion at home:

-What animal are you researching? (Polar bears. So far, we have drawn a polar bear and labelled a diagram. You can ask your child something interesting they learned about the colour of a polar bear's fur and skin).

-What are you going to be making in social studies? (we are building a pop-up community with lots of services)

-What did you do in math this week? (problem-solving and addition facts)

-What is an adjective? (adjectives are describing words, they help make our writing more exciting. We did a snowman writing piece where students had to describe with detail what the snowmen were doing.)

Kid Quotes

"Mr. Hochhalter joined our class." -Nisha

"We did firework art." -Aliyah

"We did science. We are learning about Polar Bears." -Jared

"We did Ketchup. We finished our word search and poetry." -Sahini

"We did health. We wrote goals." -Rakshan

Have a great weekend!

Good afternoon,

The homework for the week has been posted. Please DO NOT send in homework books tomorrow. Instead, please send them on Friday, and I will check both last week's and this week's homework then. There have been new Mathletics assignments assigned and new spelling words. As we were not in school on Friday, we will do a spelling test tomorrow on last week's words as a quick check-in.

Tomorrow we are expecting a huge change in weather, as it looks like it may get as warm as 4 degrees! Time to get out the shorts and flip flops... Just kidding! Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather, as I am sure the field will be super wet and slushy. We will for sure be going outside for recess and at lunch to take in the beautiful sunshine! It would be a good idea to wear boots and snow pants so that we don't have wet soggy socks and pants for the rest of the day.

I am SO excited to see the students tomorrow! It's been way too long!

Monday. January 3, 2022

 Good morning!

I am sure that you have heard the announcement from the government by now, but I wanted to remind you that there is NO SCHOOL this week for students, as their winter break has been extended.

As of now, we are expecting students back at school on MONDAY JAN 10. I will let you know if there are any changes or updates to this.

I hope everyone had a great winter break and I look forward to seeing students on Jan 10, 2022.

Happy New Year!
